Why a Health Coach, Why Now?

I came to health coaching from a place of abundance. I am already happy in my work with women in the childbearing season, offering HypnoBirthing, HypnoFertility, private hypnotherapy, birth and postpartum doula services, and lactation consultations. In all of those services, I have been offering “unofficial” health coaching for years. So to be able to officially add health coaching to my services gives me one more way to be of service to you – and opens the door to helping many more who are struggling. In the process of becoming certified, I also learned to be a little kinder to myself, and more tuned in to my own body’s signals. I’d like to think that makes me more effective as a health coach and “mommy mentor.”

My personal health quest began many years ago, when at age 26, after going through an extremely stressful time, I thought I was “going crazy” – because I couldn’t think, couldn’t stay awake but couldn’t sleep, either, and was on edge all the time (not at all my natural state). I told my mom I thought I needed to see a psychologist. She said, “Maybe – but you’ve been under a lot of stress, so why don’t you get a physical first?” So I did – and after running a few tests, the only thing the doctor found was an extreme case of hypoglycemia. And she told me that I’d almost certainly be diabetic by the time I was 40 years old. That was simply unacceptable to me, and was my motivation to embark on my search for answers.

I’ve learned so much over the years: how we’ve been misled by our government and mainstream media about what’s healthy and what’s not, how our popular and medical cultures promote “disease-care” rather than “healthcare,” and how the messages we get from every angle teach us self-criticism and how we don’t measure up. I am so grateful for the journey of discovering that eating healthfully is actually quite simple – and like most other life processes, becomes complicated when we complicate it by introducing unnatural “interventions” – in this case, processed foods with ingredients not found in nature. As my journey into nutrition and digestive health continues, my diet becomes simpler and simpler – meaning fewer and fewer foods coming out of boxes or bags – and the results are impressive: at age 59, I take no medications and enjoy a level of energy that surpasses that of many half my age, and gut health far above what I had in my twenties!

Knowing how gut health and nutrition affect hormones and fertility, pregnancy and metal development, breastfeeding, and postpartum health and mood, brings a whole other level of support I can offer to women in this unique and Sacred Season.
